Washington DC Champions Marie Curie's Legacy Through STEM Initiatives

The nation's capital honors pioneering women in science with dynamic programs and events.

Marie Curie's groundbreaking work in radioactivity not only revolutionized science but also symbolized the power of determination to change the world.

In Washington DC, this spirit thrives through numerous initiatives that celebrate and advance the role of women in science.

On November 15, 2024, the city hosted the annual STEM for Her Day, welcoming over 300 female high school students from the DC Metro area.

The event featured 22 breakout sessions led by organizations such as NASA Goddard and Amazon Web Services, offering hands-on experiences and mentorship opportunities to inspire young women to pursue careers in STEM fields.

Earlier this year, Howard University organized a two-day event on September 11–12, 2025, aimed at creating pathways to careers in robotics and artificial intelligence for local youth.

Sponsored by Amazon Fulfillment Technologies & Robotics, the event provided high school and college students with exposure to cutting-edge technologies and interactions with industry professionals.

In March 2024, the Smithsonian Institution launched its first digital exhibition, "Becoming Visible: Bringing American Women’s History Into Focus." This interactive experience highlights the often-overlooked contributions of women in various fields, emphasizing the importance of inclusion and representation in historical narratives.

Additionally, the Smithsonian American Women's History Museum, established by Congress in 2020, continues its development with the mission to honor and preserve the stories of women who have shaped the nation.

These initiatives reflect Washington DC's commitment to fostering innovation and honoring the legacy of trailblazers like Marie Curie.

By providing platforms for education, mentorship, and recognition, the city ensures that the light of knowledge continues to shine brightly for future generations.
